that being an architect is similar to being a movie director. I think this comparison comes from the fact that we don’t act, physically build the set, or fund the project with our own money. Instead, we give instructions to various professionals and manage the overall process. However, since very few people have experience as a movie director, it might not be the most relatable comparison to understand our work.<\/p>\n Therefore, when I explain my job, I often use cooking as an analogy. Let’s say building a house is like making a hamburger.<\/p>\n Think of a pre-made hamburger that you can buy in the ready-to-eat section of a supermarket as a spec home. You can purchase it if you agree with the price set by the store, but you can’t really change the ingredients or the recipe.<\/p>\n Then, think of a hamburger you can eat at a restaurant as a home from a production builder. You can choose the size, cooking method, sauce, and toppings, but the basic hamburger itself is still limited. You can only select from what’s available, and you agree to the price set by the restaurant.<\/p>\n On the other hand, our job is to have full control over the ingredients and cooking method of the hamburger. We can adjust the ratio of beef and pork, use premium beef, add nutmeg, choose to cook it in the oven or on a pan, or even sneak in some grated carrots to make it healthier without children noticing. We can listen to our customers’ preferences and incorporate our own expertise and preferences as well. However, since opinions can vary, we may need to have several meetings to come to a consensus on a single ingredient or cooking method.<\/p>\n After numerous meetings, we finalize the recipe in the form of blueprints. Then, we check if the ingredients are being sourced and prepared as specified in the recipe by the cooks and suppliers, and oversee the whole process until the final product is presented to the customer.<\/p>\n A common question that follows is, “Do architects actually cook or source the ingredients?” The answer is no. Our job is to create the recipe and check if the recipe is being followed properly, but we do not cook or source the ingredients ourselves (although there may be irregular cases where we do).<\/p>\n There are pros and cons to each type of hamburger.<\/p>\n Buying pre-made hamburgers from a supermarket can be convenient on busy days because they require less time and effort. While you may not know exactly what’s in them, sometimes you might find the taste enjoyable and you can even add your own personal touch to make it unique.<\/p>\n Eating hamburgers at a restaurant can be a hit or miss when it comes to taste, but you can choose the way it’s cooked and the sauce. Moreover, there is a sense of security in knowing that many people have eaten the same dish and the restaurant has good reviews that can easily be found on the internet, making it easier to choose a place to eat.<\/p>\n Making your own hamburger from scratch with the help of a recipe may not guarantee that the taste will be satisfactory, and it takes time and effort. However, you have control over all the ingredients and steps involved in making it, and you can be sure the recipe is followed correctly. The love and dedication put into making it might make it the best option.<\/p>\n Therefore, when you feel like having a hamburger, consider the pros and cons of buying pre-made ones, eating at a restaurant, or making it yourself with a recipe.
